Top Five Songs That Inspired The Gates by Guest Author Rachael Wade
Top 5 Songs that Inspired The Gates
Like many writers, I can’t write without music. Music and writing go hand-in-hand. They cannot be separated. Music = Storytelling = Writing, and well...yeah. You get the drift. It’s all synonymous in my book.
My iPod is attached to my hip when I’m exercising, cleaning the house, and yup, you guessed it...when I’m writing. Even more importantly, I need my music muses right before I sit down to write. Something about setting the tone and visualizing the scenes as they play out before I actually write them works wonders for my creative process. Everything becomes clearer, the ideas start to flow, and the story just comes to life.
Are you a writer? Which songs get your creative juices flowing? Or, if you read, which songs remind you of which books? I’m an avid music lover, concert-goer, and I used to sing and record music, so I always love to hear artist recommendations, especially in relation to novels or films. Tell me what you love to listen to when you write or which songs remind you of your favorite books!
1. Seven Devils by Florence and the Machine: I’m always hailing F+TM as my all-time favorite writing music muse, and this song is a perfect example of why they are just that. Seven Devils is what I consider the theme song from The Gates. The sound and the lyrics capture the entire gist of the story flawlessly.
2. Bullet with Butterfly Wings by Smashing Pumpkins: This song was on repeat too many times to count when I wrote The Gates. It really represented the resistance and their situation and inspired some of the scenes in the exile. Plus, I’m forever a hardcore 90s grunge fan. What can I say?
3. Lacrymosa by Evanescence: Evanescence, like Florence and the Machine, is heaven to my ears when I’m writing fantasy or sci-fi stuff. It’s all big, dramatic, and haunting. This song in particular inspired one of the final, most pivotal scenes in the book, which I can’t mention because it involves a massive spoiler. :) But I had to listen to it over and over again to get the scene just right.
4. What the Water Gave Me by Florence and the Machine: Another F+TM song that inspired a pivotal scene at the end of the story. This song was a wellspring of inspiration for the ending.
5. Help I’m Alive by Metric: Something about this song embodied the attitude of all the main characters once they were in the exile and ready to get down to business. It has an energetic, catchy beat, and the lyrics are fitting to the story, too.
