GUEST POST: Hillary Peak

People talk all the time about the purpose of life. For me, it is all about having fun. In response to this, my mother clearly told me that wasn’t what life was about. She is deeply religious and finds my attitude horrifying, sacrilegious, in fact. But I find that fun is the only thing, really.

I work for money. Why do I want money? Well, apart from the food and shelter aspect, it is because I love to have a good time. Shopping requires money. Eating great food, trying to new cocktails—money is required. Perhaps there are people who work for some cause of the greater good, but most people, I think work so that they can have fun. If this were not true, would there be quite so many songs about Friday night, the weekend, five o’clock, drinking, dancing, kissing? I can go on.

I exercise so that I can look good and feel good. Why? So I can have more fun. I can stay out later, drink more, dance longer. What can I say? I believe in having a good time. I believe in doing whatever it takes to have more . . . fun.

This may be the reason that I don’t particularly enjoy religion. It seems to be all about limiting fun. For example, I took my two year old to church yesterday for Easter Sunday. “Who’s that?” she asks, quite loudly, a chubby little finger pointed at a stain glass window of Christ. “That’s Jesus,” I respond quietly. “Jesus?” she asks. “Jesus,” I repeat, feeling guilty that my child has no idea who Jesus Christ is. And there it is—I feel guilty. It quells the fun of having her in church. She proceeds to ask me over and over whom Jesus is, until she finally accepts it and simply points at the window yelling Jesus. Lots of stares and pointed a-hems, more guilt, less fun. Oh well, what can I say? I’m a heathen. I seem to be raising a heathen, but I sure hope she has a lot of fun!

About Hillary:

"Who am I?

Author (but government lawyer by day)

I’m a recovering idealist. I became a lawyer to change the world and am still somewhat shocked that didn’t occur. Now, my goal is to retire from practicing law and write novels that people love.

I started with topics I knew–shared experiences of hating my job, searching for something more meaningful and losing a loved one.

I’m moving on to writing legal thrillers. My first one will be out before the end of 2012!"
