Synopsis:  4. The number of times my delicate wings have been broken and clamped behind my back.
68. The number inked upon my skin, marking me the sixty-eighth pixie to be stolen.
87. The number of days I’ve been wrongfully imprisoned.
88. The first day the faeries will regret stealing me.

Healthy. Cheery. Vivacious. All traits Rosalie has before becoming enslaved by the faeries to make an endless supply of pixie dust. Now that Rosalie has been traumatized by slave labor, extreme desolate conditions and multiple deaths, this hardened pixie is anything but. When this rebellious teenager attempts an escape, she’s isolated in cramped quarters until she learns her place. Just as she begins to let go of all that hope, she finds an unlikely friend in Jack, the faerie assigned to guard her. Interspecies dating is forbidden in the fae world, so their growing attraction is unacceptable. And even if Jack can find a way to free her, they know the prison is the only place they can truly be together.

Clean YA Fantasy.

My review:  Dust is the first book in the Of Dust and Darkness series by Devon Ashley.  I received a copy from the author in exchange for my honest opinionn as part of her blog tour.

Dust starts of like a Disney movie, with pixie life in the hollow.  Our main character Rosalie is a free-spirited pixie who loves to sleep in.  Rosalie is pixie sized, as in 6 inches tall, but when the story suddenly turns dark with Rosalie's abduction, you no longer think about the tiny size.

Rosalie is abducted and forced into slave labor, making pixie dust.  The pixies are kept in tiny, cramped prisons.  They are tortured.  Their wings are broken.  They don't receive food regularly.  Rosalie doesn't let these conditions break her.  When another enslaved pixie dies, Rosalie is determined to escape.  She is caught and taken to a more secure location, where she is guarded by a faery named Jack.  For some reason, Jack is nice to her.  Over time the two form a connection, though it is forbidden for faeries and pixies to be in a relationship.  Will Rosalie escape her prison?  Will Rosalie and Jack find a way to be together?  Find out by reading Dust by Devon Ashley.

Rosalie goes through so much in this book.  She goes from a free spirited, almost lazy pixie in the beginning but she learns what hard work is about.  She maintains her sense of self and stays strong despite terrible conditions.  She attempts to rescue the other pixies at the risk of herself.  Jack is an irresistable character that you grow to love the further into the book you get.  The pacing of this book is well done, and I for one, enjoyed reading a faery story that shows them as the dark creatures that they are.
