Review of Hexes in Texas by Michelle Kopra

Synopsis:  Fed up with the slushy snow of winter, and the frigid Canadian wizards Julie McNabb wants a transfer to somewhere warm, and where the men are smoking hot!

Instead, she ends up in Bug Tussle. A small wizard farming community in Texas where the unicorns freak her out, and the resident witches watch NASCAR and eat Barbeque.
Despite her goals to get out as fast as she can, Julie makes friends, has fun, and falls for Vance, the hunky animal manager.

Now if only Julie can convince Vance to give up on Mrs. Right, for Mrs. right now!

Review:  I knew, from the disclaimer, that I was going to love this book before I even got into the first chapter.  The author is funny, a tad snarky, and I couldn't help snickering when reading:

"No Unicorns were harmed in the making of this book.....

However, I might have strapped wings and a horn on the cats for proper motivation, but I never tried to ride them!

They were too hard to catch."

That being said - the story lived up to my expectations.  It was funny.  Skippy, Julie's cat, is snarky as all get out, and is probably my favorite character in the book.  He adds quite a bit of comedic relief.

Julie is a witch from Canada, who gets tired of doing the same old thing, while freezing her butt off.  She accepts an assignment in New Orleans doing security, but instead gets rerouted to a small town in Texas.  Julie rebels at the thought of staying in this picturesque small town, with everything she has.  She's even willing to give up on hottie, Vance, to pursue her dreams.

Things get convoluted along the way.  Witches Julie thinks are evil end up being allies.  Friends are really foe.  The enemy wants Big Tussle and have resorted to all out war.  Julie is offered the chance to take her dream position in New Orleans if she gives up security Intel on Bug Tussle, but if she does it could mean all out war.  Does Julie give over the info?  Does she finally come to her senses and realize Vance is more important than mint juleps and antebellum mansions?  You'll have to read and find out.

As I said, Skippy is my favorite character, just because he is so funny.  I also got a kick out of the unicorns as well.  I liked Julie even though she seemed so focused on the perceived ideal life that she was willing to consider giving it all up, for the great life and friends she had in Bug Tussle.  Vance is swoon worthy.  I will take a man like him any day!

As for the writing, Michelle Kopra writes in a style that's easy to read.  She doesn't over complicate scenes, but at the same time is very descriptive and does a good job of world-building.  I didn't notice a lot of grammatical errors, which I know bugs some people.  All in all, it just seemed to flow well.  The book is only 126 pages, so if you're looking for a fun read that you can finish in one setting - here's your book.

Because of some romantic scenes, I'm rating this one ages 18+.

I have this book but haven't had a chance to read it, but I will and this review has just made me even that much more excited to read it.
