Review & Giveaway: Flame of Surrender by Rhiannon Paille

Synopsis:  Kaliel and Krishani weren't meant to meet or fall in love but they did. Krishani’s dreams of death lead him to a fate he’s terrified of - becoming the next Ferryman. His only refuge is Kaliel, the peculiar girl that swims with merfolk and talks to trees. Kaliel has a secret of her own. She’s the Amethyst Flame, one of nine apocalyptic weapons. The Valtanyana will destroy everything on Avristar to get to her. Kaliel has to choose: face them, hide or unleash the Flame.

How far would you go to save everything you ever loved?

Review:  I received this book in exchange for my honest review, but it in no way shaped my opinion.

Flame of Surrender is an epic fantasy - which isn't my normal read - but I was not disappointed.  Flame of Surrender was easy to read, and kept me glued to the page.  I enjoyed learning about the mythological creatures in Rhiannon Paille's world.  She does an excellent job of world-building, and I could picture the places she described.

Kaliel, our herioine, is elven, and also one of nine flames (the Amethyst flame).  She grows and overcomes much through the course of the book.  In the beginning she is struggling to understand her parable as told by the great oak.  I thought that part was pretty cool.  I also like Kaliel because she is non-traditional.  She breaks the rules.  I love how intune with nature that she is.

The book is told partly from Kaliel's point of view, and partly from Krishani, our heroes.  I like books written in this style because you get to know both characters better, how they think, what they're feeling, etc.  Throughout the book both Kaliel and Krishani are going through many of the same things, but don't really communicate about it.  As it is, they are star crossed lovers in that they aren't meant to be together.  Krishani isn't even supposed to be able to love.  I can't wait for the next book, so I can see if Kaliel and Krishani are able to beat the odds.
