The Captive by L.J. Smith
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
The Captive is the second book in The Secret Circle series by L.J. Smith. Cassie briefly met Adam in The Initiation and felt and instant connection. Then Cassie moved to New Salem and discovered that she is a witch. At her initiation ceremony into the coven Adam arrives back on the scene and Cassie discovers that Adam belongs to her best friend, Diana. Diana's dark cousin, Faye, discovers the connection between Cassie and Adam and uses it against Cassie, blackmailing her to do things for her, including voting for her as coven leader over Diana. In the end will Cassie do the right thing? Will the coven still support her?
Cassie and her friends are easy to relate to. Smith's books often have an underlying moral, and the soul mate principal so common in her Night World books makes an appearance here as well. I enjoyed reading the Captive and continuing the series. Smith's books are well-written, quick reads. I highly recommend her stories to anyone teen or adult.
