Eos (The Samsara Chroniclces 1) by Gabriella Bradley & Diana Kemp Review & Giveaway

The Samsara Chronicles Banner

Synopsis:  Blending elements of futuristic, fantasy, science fiction and the paranormal, the Samsara Chronicles explores the duality of good and evil set against two worlds, Earth and Nirvana.

Guided by mystical beings, a human mother bears a daughter of alien royalty, Aislinn, destined to champion the future of two worlds.

Review:  Eos is the first of 13 in the Samsara Chronicles by Gabriella Bradley and Diana Kemp.  Each section is very short, so I do not want to spoil it by summarizing the story.  I will tell you that the writing is strong and the story engrossing.  The characters are fairly well developed and most are likable.  I look forward to seeing how they develop over the next 12 books in the series, which I will also be reviewing here.  Perhaps once I've completed the whole set I will review the story as a whole.  In the mean time, happy reading and enter the giveaway below for a chance to win a kindle fire.

Side note for my younger readers - this book does contain adult content.

Synopsis:  Talia Lyons is Talented.  Born after a nuclear spill, she is part of a new generation possessing special abilities; Talia can read the minds of others and manipulate their thoughts.  Whether Morphers, Light Manipulators or Telekinetics, the Talented are taught to control their abilities under the protective eye of the government- to use their Talents for good. But all Talia wants is revenge.

Talia joins the Hunters, an elite group of government operatives, hoping to one day kill Ian Crane - the man who ordered the execution of her parents.  Ever since she witnessed their brutal deaths, Talia has spent her life honing her abilities, determined to settle the score.  But she still has a lot to learn before she can ease the pain inside. Talia turns to a boy who can mimic her Talents, a boy who truly understands her inner turmoil.  But even he can’t help Talia, when she’s forced to choose between saving herself and avenging the lives of her parents.

Talented is an action-packed adventure, about a group of teenagers who aren't afraid to embrace their fears and fight for what they believe in.

Review:  I love, love, loved, Talented by Sophie Davis.  Talia Lyons has a special talent - which is useful - because she plans to hunt down and kill the people that killer her family.  She attends a special school for those kids that have "talent" and joins an elite team called the "hunters" as a way to take out thos in opposition.  As a child she was taken in by one of her family's friends and raised along with their son, honing her talent.  Their son, Donovan, is Talia's love interest and best friend.  Tension heats up when Talia is accepted as a hunter and forms a connection with her team member Erik.

They dystopian world that Sopie Jordon paints is unlike any other that I've read so far.  I found that her words painted a picture and really gave a glimpse into Talia's world.  I really enjoyed Talia's character - getting to know her, and watching her grow as a person as she made new friends and adapted to her life as a hunter.  I enjoyed her banter with her teammate Erik.  I was distrustful of Donovon in the beginning - I dislike male characters that are jealous and controling.

I am really looking forward to reading the next book in the series.  Dystopian is a newer genre for me - and Talented is one of the better ones I've read so far.

Gone at Zero Hundred 00:00 by C. R. Hiatt Review and Giveaway

Photobucket

Synopsis:
Sydney Marie McSwain and her pal, Cody Beck, team up to take on a secret club called The Devil's Door where members are branded with the tattoo of a devil and call themselves The Privileged Ones.   Sydney Marie McSwain - a tomboy who yearned for a father.  Cody Beck - a wannabe filmmaker, wisenheimer and flirt.  Jaden White - the star who led the high school hockey team to two championships, and was now on the A-list for NHL scouts.  Sydney Marie McSwain loves her mom, Anna - a private investigator in the coastal city where they live - but they had a major issue between them. Anna refused to give Sydney the identity of her father. On the day of her high school graduation, they were battling it out, once again. An hour later, Sydney, Cody and Jaden were at the local café, and watched as Anna was gunned down, and it was broadcasted on live TV.  Faced with immediate responsibility, Sydney and Cody agreed to take over the agency, only they changed the name to McSwain & Beck. At the same time, Sydney convinced Sutter Beach Detective, Ace Carter, to help her track down her father. Out of the blue, a model walked in and hired them to follow her step-brother. While Cody was busy editing a trailer to solicit new clients, Sydney settled into her lemon-yellow pickup to do surveillance, and wound up staking out a secret club called The Devil’s Door whose suspicious members wore the tattoo of a devil. That same night, Sydney received a call from one of her mom’s former clients, only the client was gunned down at the location where they agreed to meet. The mysterious discovery of a DVD revealed the possibility that teenagers were being abducted, only nobody reported them missing. On the hunt for the victims, McSwain & Beck were chased by men in ski masks, nearly gunned down by members of a cartel called the outlaws, Sydney’s precious pickup was broken into; then the step-brother they were hired to follow, was found dead and Sydney was the number one suspect. If things weren’t bad enough already, they had to figure out how to crash a red-carpet Mardi Gras bash being held on a private cruise ship, before it sailed off into the sunset, where they just might meet the devil, himself.  Now, the clock was ticking…And time was running out…How was she ever going to find her father, now?
“Their lives were in the hands of two 18 year-olds…”

Review:  Gone at Zero Hundred 00:00 by CR Hiatt is an action packed thriller in the same vein as James Patterson, but written for young adults.  The story was action-packed, edge-of-your seat entertainment.  The story is about 18 year old Sydney and her friends Cody and Jaden.  Sydney’s mom, a PI that has been working with the police to uncover a dirty cop, is murdered.  Sydney witnesses it live on TV.  She decides to take over the family business, as she and Cody have been working there anyway.
Sydney and Cody get their first case, along with a mysterious phone call from one of her mom’s previous clients.  The two are somehow connected and lead Sydney on a wild journey, constantly putting her in peril – much to the chagrin of the cop who has been a mentor and father figure.  In the end are Sydney and Cody in over their heads or can they save the day?
I really liked the main character, Sydney.  She is witty and easy to like.  She is fearless, curious and wants to do the right thing despite the hardships she’s faced with the recent death of her mom.  Her friend and partner Cody is a good secondary character.  He is caring and seems like fun – even though he constantly has a camera to his eye trying to film crazy shots.

CR Hiatt's writing style is perfectly paced and easy to read.  She really kept me guessing.  I will definately be reading more by CR Hiatt and I will be recommending the book to many.  I am dying for the next book in the series – I really want to know who Sydney’s father is!

What are my writing quirks and must haves to write? by GUEST AUTHOR C. R. Hiatt

Before I sit down and start writing, a lot of things need to be in place. Some may call them quirks. I call them: tools to a future bestselling novel. [Symbol]
For starters, where I write is critical. I am somewhat of an odd ball when it comes to that. I don’t have an office (by choice) - at least not the kind of office that everyone would consider normal. I love the outdoors, and don’t like being confined to a room with a desk and a computer, or four walls closing in on me. Instead, I bought myself a portable laptop desk that I can move around to wherever I plant myself for a particular day. The portable desk has compartments for all my accessories, phones, Kindle and USB cords. The legs can be folded underneath, and it can easily sit on my lap, or I can put the legs down and sit opposite a comfortable chair.
If the weather outside is poor, I park myself in front of a large window of the seasonal home. Now that summer is creeping up on us and the temperatures are starting to get warm, I will move the portable desk out on a screened-in deck, or I might even park myself down by the water.
Another quirk is; I need noise. A lot of writers need it to be completely quiet when they’re writing. If I’m stuck inside because of rotten weather, I either have the TV on tuned into an action flick, or I have the music cranked up. When the weather cooperates and I can sit on the deck, I put a sign out letting the neighbors and toursis know I’m “working”; then they know to steer clear. I may like the noise when I’m writing, but I prefer to not be interrupted when I’m in the middle of plotting a scene.
Now comes the must haves…I must have tons of dark chocolate in the refrigerator, and a case of Dasani water. Once I start the writing process, the only thing that I will definitely break for is; exercise. Exercise is a major part of the process to keep the juices flowing. Chances are; I won’t have time for full meals during my process, so I will have stocked up on salad fixings, and of course, my chocolate. To keep the hunger at bay, I will nibble on small pieces of the chocolate. It also helps with my concentration - at least that’s my excuse for getting to eat chocolate. [Symbol]
When I’m finally seated and settled, first I check emails and social media outlets. I CANNOT start writing unless that is done. Otherwise, my mind will constantly drift off while I’m writing, worrying that I might have missed something. With that out of the way, I begin my writing process using my regimented “quirky” process, and I do not deviate from:
1. Write out a one or two sentence logline describing the story.
2. Write out a list of my characters and mini bios and backgrounds.
3. Using my logline as a guide, I write a one-page outline which can be used as a synopsis later.
4. Using my outline as a guide, I then write a draft screenplay using the three-act structure, and make sure to include the action scenes and dialogue.
5. Now that I have three-act screenplay (beginning, middle and end), I start adapting the story into a novel.

Author Bio
CR HIATT is a writer of screenplays and an author of YA action-mystery novels. The daughter of a military veteran, CR grew up in a small town where she became an All-American athlete. CR knew early on that she wasn't cut out for the nine to five type of job - her tendency to day dream about adventures often got in the way. But, being the daughter of a Navy Veteran she also knew one had to do what was necessary to be secure, so she disciplined herself to push those dreams aside and settled on working in the entertainment legal field. When those dreams invaded her world once again, CR finally gave in and set out to write her own adventures. What the heck, right. If you can't live 'em, you might as well write about them. The McSwain & Beck series are works of fiction, only based on real life events. Gone at Zero Hundred 00:00 is the first in the series, and available now. Fireworks on the 4th will be released in late June, just before the 4th of July holiday season.

Tina Haveman is the founder and CEO of eXtasy Books and Devine Destinies. Tina was born in Europe, left there at age eight, then traveled to several countries with her parents, to finally settle in Australia for many years. She immigrated to Canada in 1973 where she has lived since. After raising a family of five as a single mother, she finally found time to concentrate on her writing. In 2000 she started her own publishing house with a partner but became too busy with eXtasy and Devine to continue her involvement and withdrew to focus entirely on eXtasy and Devine. Tina devotes all her time to her publishing house and authors and is grateful for the success her company is experiencing. “After many years of struggling to keep my head above water while raising five children on my own, I have much to be thankful for,” said Tina. “While the company affords me a comfortable living now and I have quite a staff aboard, I thoroughly enjoy what I do and won’t stop until someone up above tells me it’s time.”

About eXtasy Books

eXtasy Books first opened its doors December 2002 with a small website that was soon revamped into a more business like site. Within a matter of months, eXtasy outgrew that website and had to build another site to accommodate its growing catalog. Since then, the site has been revamped a number of times. Our imprint, Devine Destinies, started in 2008 to accommodate mainstream, YA, inspirational and children's books.

Since eXtasy’s birth, it has seen several upheavals, but with hard work, a loyal staff and a loyal stable of authors, eXtasy managed to survive them, along with the depression that hit our countries hard.

This past years has seen tremendous growth at eXtasy and we have moved our website to our own dedicated server to accommodate its growing readership.

We publish a wide variety of stories ranging from short stories to full books, pricing kept reasonable to accommodate our readers. Prices range from 1.59 to 5.99.

With so many new e-readers on the market, think about the ease of taking books along when traveling, getting rid of dust collecting books in your house, thereby making more room, being able to read a book on your phone or handheld while going to and from work on a bus or train. Think about the many books you can store on your computer. And think about the books you can hide from nosy relatives or children…

Comen Spel’in Misteaks by Guest Author Shannon Mayer

For those of us (and by that I mean me) who can write but still struggle with spelling from time to time, this post is for you. (And by you I mean me again.) I think I have come to rely so much on my spell checker that I have gotten lazy when it comes to correct spelling. It’s so easy to hit the spell check button and have the whole manuscript in perfect order in such a short time it almost seems redundant to bother doing it yourself.

You see so many small spelling mistakes if you cruise the web at all. Blogs, articles Facebook Posts (gah, that drives me wild!). Not to mention Twitter shortenings, text speak, and mashed up words that seem to have no meaning. While they can help us get our message across faster, I think we are losing some of the basic things that we should still carry from our grade school years. You know, the ability to spell. Big words, not just the little tiny ones. As I mentioned, I can be as guilty of this as anyone else, so no worries, I’m not pointing fingers!

From time to time I think it’s a good idea to make sure our grammar and spelling is up to snuff. You know, old school style. It would do us no good to have an article or blog come out riddled with mistakes. (Unless we don’t expect anyone to see it, and even then, this is the age of the internet and someone will find it) What kind of authors would that make us? (I try to fix mine I do!) In fact, it is a large part of why I take so much time with my manuscripts, the last thing I want is for people to be pushed out of the story, because I didn’t do my due diligence as the author. But, I also don’t want to have my editors call me and tell me that they are going to have to charge me double, because of my numerous mistakes. Eeek, that is something I try to avoid at all costs. No pun intended. Well, maybe a little one. ;p

So, for fun and a little wake up call for us bad spellers, here’s a list of 10 words with a correct spelling and an incorrect spelling. Now no cheating and using a dictionary or your spell check, this is all on you. Good luck and happy spelling!

About the Author:
Reading and writing from a very young age I learned early on that stories built in a fantasy world were where the fun was at. Reading books by Robert Jordan spurred me on and it was the first real epic fantasy that I fell in love with. After that came Piers Anthony, Melanie Rawn and into my older teen years, Anne Rice.

It was in Rice's novels that the idea of urban fantasy really bloomed for me and it was about that time that my grandmother was letting me read her Harlequin Historical novels. (Okay, actually she was slipping them to me when my mother wasn't looking, but let's not get picky.)

The combination of love stories and darker fantasy stuck with me and it's now not only what I gravitate towards to read on my off time (Kelly Armstrong, Laurell K Hamilton, Kim Harrison), but has become the style I love to write in.

Besides writing, I love to spend time with my family and animals, horseback ride, garden and hike with my husband.

Black Satin by Rae Hacton Review & GIVEAWAY

Synopsis:What if you weren’t who you thought you were?
What if your whole life changed in an instant and you were released to a new identity?
What if you were forced to kill the one you love?
What if everything you knew wasn’t real, and you awaken to a new world?
What if love could take you to unknown places?
How beautiful is death really?

Marcus Marble has disappeared from Ellie’s life, and she needs answers to questions and he’s the only one who can answer them. How is her sister back from the dead, and why is Ellie still alive? When Ellie realizes Marcus isn’t coming back, she is forced to move on with her life the best way she can, in hopes of finding the answers herself, but when people at school begin to be viciously murdered, and Giles reveals to her a life changing secret, she decides to investigate the possible truth of it. What she discovers is more than she thought she would. The only time Ellie feels normal is when she’s around Walter, the new guy at school. And normal is how she wants to feel, now that Marcus is gone from her life. But Walter may not be all that he seems, either, and she just might spiral in to an even more dark world, she never thought possible. And when it occurs to her that Marcus has made the decision to pass on through to the afterlife, during the Risorgimento, she races against time to stop him, while knowing she has feelings for Walter, too. Will she make it in time to stop Marcus from passing through, and if she does, what will she tell Walter? Her heart will have to make the final decision. But will the choice be worth dying for?

My Review: Black Satin is the second book in Rae Hachton's Pretty In Black series.  For starters, I want to comment on the covers.  Both books have eerie, beautiful covers.  They are what first grabbed my attention when deciding to sign up for the tour.

Rae Hachton writes in a lovely, flowing style that paints pictures in your head of the events happening in the story.  She has a lovely gothic flare that stands out among today's young adult paranormal writers.  The plot moves along at a fast pace and I couldn't stop reading until I'd finished the whole book.

In this sequel, Ellie is lost without Marcus, but makes an effort to move on with her life.  Giles is back on the scene, and as I had hoped when reading Pretty in Black, we learn more about what Ellie is "chosen" for.  We also see much more character development and Ellie feels even more real to me than in the last book.  A new character, Walter, enters the scene and I was left hanging on the edge of my seat waiting to see if Walter's intentions were good or bad.  I won't give any of that away, because I really think you should read the book (and enter below for your chance to win it).

Black Satin will not disappoint.  It's a creepy and lovely and Rae Hachton's writing, characters and nightmare worlds are amazingly well thought out and portrayed.  I hope you will read it, and let me know what you think

The House on Blackstone Moor by Carole Gill

Reading Addiction Blog Tours

Synopsis:  “They say my father was mad, so corrupted by evil and tainted by sin that he did what he did. I came home to find them all dead; their throats savagely cut. My sisters only five and eight were gone as well as my brother who was twelve. My mother too lay butchered in her marriage bed. The bed her children were born in…”

Young Rose Baines discovers the savage murders of her family by her mad, incestuous father.
She is plunged into a nightmare of hell and is incarcerated in two madhouses after which she is helped to obtain a position as governess at Blackstone House.

The house is located on haunted moorland. Nothing is as it seems for Blackstone House and its inhabitants have hideous secrets. There is unimaginable horror there but there is love too--love that comes at a terrible price.

The story is as haunting as it is terrifying and will remain with the reader long after its disturbing tale has been told.

My Review:

When I read the synopsis for The House on Blackstone Moor I knew that I had to read it.  It sounded incredibly intriguing and more than a little bit creepy.  The story sounded very mysterious, and the gothic nature caught my attention.  The story did not disappoint.  I started it and couldn’t put it down until I finished it.

Rose Baines returns home to find that her father has slaughtered her whole family and then himself.  She is taken to an asylum as a result of her distress.  After a horrific span of time in the asylum, where she is assaulted, her psychiatrist, Dr. Bannion, recommends her for a governess position with friends of his.  While she is preparing for the transition she spends a month living with Dr. Bannion and his housekeeper.  While there, she begins to doubt her sanity as well as lose her trust in Dr. Bannion.  Everywhere she turns is secrets.

When she starts her employment for Mr. & Mrs. Darton as governess for their children, she thinks her life could be changing for the positive.  Rose loves the children, but over time she begins to notice creepy things about the children as well as Mr. & Mrs.  Darton.  By the time Rose starts to seriously question things, it could be too late.  The Darton’s are more sinister than they appear and the conspiracy deeper than Rose could have ever imagined.

I don’t want to give away too much in my summary.  This book was amazing!  I really enjoyed the writing style and would love to read more books by Carole Gill.  This is one book that I could not predict the ending.  There were so many twists and turns that it kept me on the edge of my seat.  The book contains so many horrors that it’s amazing that Rose could endure through the end.

The book contains vampires, demons, fallen angels, the macabre and the sinister.  The relationship that develops between Rose and Mr. Darton is forbidden love, making it all the more interesting.  Mrs. Darton’s devil worship and drunken debaucheries gives the story a taboo quality.  The children make interesting secondary characters and they’re very likable, except for their slight creepiness.

A word for my readers, rape occurs in this book, and let the reader beware.

Author Bio

I wrote my first story at age 8. It was sci-fi but as both my parents were sci-fi fanatics it wasn’t a surprise.
I continued to write however life got in the way as it often does, and it wasn’t until 2000 that I turned back to writing. I joined a local writer’s workshop and was greatly encouraged to keep up with my writing and to send things out.

Shortly afterwards, I was selected by Northwest Playwrights of England for further development but found I preferred fiction writing.

Widely published in horror and sci-fi anthologies, The House on Blackstone Moor is my first novel. It is a tale of vampirism, madness, obsession and devil worship.

Set in 19th Century Yorkshire, its locales include Victorian madhouses as well as barren, wind-swept Yorkshire moors. The story is a marriage of horror and gothic romance. I think it can best be described as being gothic paranormal romantic horror.

I suppose you could say I want to put the Goth back into Gothic.

Living in the area the novel is set in, was very beneficial. Also, as a great admirer of the Brontes and frequent visitor to the Bronte Parsonage in Haworth, I found myself nearly obsessed with recreating the gothic romantic narrative.

Having been employed in a hospital which had been historically a workhouse and asylum in Victorian times, I was able to add great realism to the depiction of the asylums as described in my novel.

The sequel, Unholy Testament, is the confession of a demon to the woman he loves. It is nearing the end of its first draft and will be released shortly.
