Guest Post: Between the Lines: (Mostly) Unknown Facts About Jeric From The Space Between

Along The Space Between release tour, we’re sharing behind-the-scenes tidbits about the book, the characters and more. Things that fall “between the lines” of the story’s prose. So here’s Jeric, one of the main characters, sharing a few (sort of) unknown facts about himself. I have to give a little warning: the mature content warning on the book is mostly due to Jeric. But you can’t help but love him.

Jeric *with a shrug*: I am who I am. What you see is what you get. Except for those parts I don’t want to talk about. Here’s a taste of me—enjoy the tease *snarky grin*:

  1. I had a good life. An awesome life. Until I was 14 and sh—crap got real. Too real, if you ask me. And then life sucked. It still sucks big ones. Until I met Leni, anyway. But back thenI had it all. A great family. Friends. Life in a two-story house in the suburbs. But it was all a beautiful lie.
  2. Neither of my parents was musically inclined, but my first grade music teacher noticed my talent right away. The next thing I knew, I was in piano lessons. Then the guitar and the saxophone and my parents even gave in to the drums. They made a room in the basement into a music room with all of my instruments. Guess I was kind of spoiled. Probably shouldn’t give Leni so much crap about that.
  3. I can play any song on just about any instrument by ear. Well, I used to anyway. Not exactly anymore. So enough about music.
  4. They say some guys are boob men, others are legs and others are butts. I don’t see how they can pick a favorite part. I can’t. I like them all.
  5. don’t back down from fightsActually, I throw the first punch. But the whole professional thing sucks. I don’t care who you are, eventually, you’re going to get hit. The better you get, the better the other guy in the ring with you. The pains a rush. The adrenaline’s a turn-on. But I can do without the cuts and bruises. It’s kind of hard to appreciate a woman’s body when your swollen cheek is blocking the view and your hands are too sore to feel what’s under them. I’d rather roll in the sheets with a girl than bounce around a ring with another guy any day.
  6. The closest thing to sports I did as a kid was skateboarding. I could grind, flip and Ollie all over. Then I broke my hand in a crash and couldn’t play guitar for months. That was the end of my boarding days until I went to the French Alps and did some snowboarding. I’ll be doing that again, no lie.
  7. My favorite things:
Women
Jack Daniels
Women
Getting inked
Weightlifting
Women
Running
People watching—there are some freaks out there!
(Don’t tell anyone, but I like to read, too.)
Did I mention women? Preferably naked. (See what I did there? Gotta hold on to my man-card.)

Heh. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. If you didn’t notice, Jeric didn’t really share all that much about himself. That’s just how he is. But you get to know him a lot better—the real Jeric—in The Space Between, the first part of The Book of Phoenix.

After a month-long dance tour through Italy, 20-year-old Leni Drago returns to Georgia to care for her great-uncle, only to find him gone, the home they shared empty and any evidence he ever existed wiped out. All that’s left is a journal she can’t open.

Jeric Winters has been searching for a piece of his past for over a year, only to reach a dead-end in Georgia. When an urgent and magnetic pull draws him out of his hotel room, he comes face-to-face with the beautiful dancer who’s been haunting his dreams day and night.

Jeric’s one to stay away from—a bad-boy, hit-it-and-quit-it type—but Leni can’t escape the fervent feelings between them. As their own existences begin to crumble around them and shadowy forms that are more monsters than men attack, they realize there’s more to the connection between them than physical fascination.

To solve the riddle their lives have become, they must embark on a journey that requires them to face their pasts and release their true souls. And they must do it fast—dark ones from another world are closing in, intent on killing them. Permanently.

Review: A Glimpse of Her Soul by Stuart Jaffe

Young Adult Fantasy
Date Published: 2/11/13

When 16-year-old Gillian Boone discovers that a secret message has been etched into her soul, her world of normal teenage life is destroyed. Now, bizarre monstrosities try to kill her so they can read this message as her soul departs, hoping its information will guide them back to the world they came from.

Though she has the aid of her father and some new friends, there is only one who has the real power to help. A rogue monster named Jackhammer Jack. But he might want her secret, too, even as he helps her evade the clutches of those pursuing her.

With threats surrounding her, Gillian will have to lead her allies in a struggle for survival - a struggle all the more treacherous when her allies are just as dangerous as her enemies.

Filled with action, excitement, magic, a touch of romance, and mystery, A Glimpse of Her Soul is a pulse-pounding ride you're sure to enjoy.

My Review
A Glimpse of Her Soul is a mix of paranormal and sci-fi/fantasy.  It was an engrossing read, that kept me turning pages due mostly to it's very unique plot.  I have never read anything like this before.

The action in the book is very fast paced.  I like fast paced books because they keep you going.  There were a few places that the book was a little too fast paced and could have been slowed down with some more details added.

The characters in the book were developed nicely, with Jackhammer Jack being my favorite.  Gillian acts like a normal teenage girl.  She lashes out at her father and struggles with her feelings while she is struggling for survival.  I think this is pretty realistic of how a teenage girl would act under the circumstances.

This book was a lot of fun and I recommended it to anyone that likes sci-fi/fantasy and anyone looking for something unique.

Book Blast & Giveaway: Moonlit by Jadie Jones

Moonlit Eighteen-year-old Tanzy Hightower knows horses, has grown up with them on Wildwood Farm. She also knows not to venture beyond the trees that line the pasture. Things happen out there that can’t be explained. Or undone. Worse, no one but she and the horses can see what lurks in the shadows of the woods. When a moonlit ride turns into a terrifying chase, Tanzy is left to question everything, from the freak accident that killed her father to the very blood in her veins. Broken and confused, she turns to Lucas, a scarred, beautiful stranger, and to Vanessa, a charming new friend who has everything Tanzy doesn’t. But why do they seem to know more about her than she knows herself?
Praise "Virginia's trees look like they're burning. Most of them blaze crimson or gold, but some still have a chokehold on their green. I wish they'd give it up already. Leaves are more beautiful when they're dying." And so Moonlit begins. From here the story rolls from one twist to another with many vivid characters whose motives are hard to predict. I found myself being suspicious of everyone, wanting to tell Tanzy to be very careful. The deeper I fell into the plot, the more questions kept rising to the surface. But not to worry, all of my questions were answered. Appropriate for all ages, if you love paranormal fantasy mixed with suspense, mystery and other-worldly romance, you'll love this novel! ~Author Julie Ford   Prologue The first anniversary of my father’s death was even harder on my mother. Back then, I thought she was haunted most by what she didn’t know. I refused to blame her when she raged above me on our staircase that night, drunk and sad and angry. When she made me promise I’d never ride again. When she hurled a half-full bottle of vodka at my face and it exploded on the wooden stairs at my feet. I hadn’t tried to get out of the way. She had just missed. I wanted to tell her that knowledge was no solace, that what you know can burn inside you until there’s nothing left but guilt and ash. I also wanted to protect her from losing the only piece of him she had left. So I didn’t say a word.
Author Jadie Jones Georgia native Jadie Jones first began working for a horse farm at twelve years old, her love of horses matched only by her love of books. She went on to acquire a B.A. in equine business management, and worked for competitive horse farms along the east coast. The need to write followed wherever she went. She currently coaches a hunt seat equitation team that competes in the Interscholastic Equestrian Association, and lives with her family in the foothills of north Georgia. When she's not working on the next installment of the Moonlit series, she is either in the saddle or exploring the great outdoors with her daughter. Moonlit is her first book.

Refreshingly intelligent and loads of fun!
I lost a few hours as I read this book. It's a Young Adult novel that is refreshingly and astonishingly intelligent, and the love story is perfectly played out.
~Christine Ashworth, Amazon Review

The mystery was intriguing - I loved how Wendy Russo weaved in all her secrets throughout the book, how she incorporated just enough to keep you reading, while never actually divulging much of anything. I was guessing for most of it and that's pretty hard to make me do.
~Julie, Clean Teen Reads

Wendy Russo has created a masterpiece.

Review & Giveaway: The Persnickety Princess by Falcon Storm

About the book:  High up in the tallest tower of the purplest castle in the Kingdom by the Sea, Princess Lavender awaits rescue. Desperate as she may be, only the most dashing, well dressed, properly mannered prince will do. Oh, and he must stand exactly four and three-quarters inches taller than her. A princess has got to have standards, after all. When, finally, one such prince comes to her castle—not to rescue her, but her younger sister—Lavender refuses to be ignored. Instead of waiting for the next suitor to come along, she devises a plan to put herself in danger, thus forcing the upstart prince to forget her sister and rescue her instead. Well accustomed to getting her way, there is only one thing, unfortunately, that this princess can’t control—her luck. When her plans go awry, putting her in very real danger, will she allow the prince to rescue her as he sees fit? Will he even want to try? And will anyone be able to find a way to rescue Lavender from her persnickety ways once and for all? Find out in this comedic tale of princes, dragons, and dreams that just may come true. The Persnickety Princess is a lower grade chapter book intended for kids 6 to 9 years old (although kids of all ages are sure to enjoy it!

Pick up your copy through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Smashwords or Kobo Books.

My Review:
I absolutely loved this book!  I think that both of my step-children (ages 8 and 11) would love this story, and I plan to read it to them the next time we have them.  This book is silly and fun and had tons of laughs.

The Persnickety Princess is a tale told by a Bard called Once. Upon. A. Time.  He has been jailed and is telling the story of the Persnickety Princess Lavender in order to get out of his situation.  Lavender has high ideals of the only prince she wants.  She hides herself in a tower and hires a witch to keep away suitors that don't fit her ideal prince.

Lavender thinks she has found her match in Prince Hugo, but he is smitten with her sister Petunia and rides off to save her from a dragon.  Lavender, not to be ignored sets up an elaborate plot to fake her own dangerous situation.  Things get bumpy when her plan misfires and she really is in danger.  When Prince Hugo's squire keeps rescuing her and Hugo continues to ignore her in favor of Petunia, will Lavender adjust her way of thinking and learn her lesson about being Persnickety?  Find out by reading her tale.

This story is cute, fun, and well written and  I look forward to reading more fairy tales by Falcon Storm.

About the author: I was born in the frozen wasteland of Alaska with the unfortunate stigma of being both a daydreamer and left-handed. Starting from an early age, I've filled my life with stories of every sort from my father's hunting trips to the Holy Trilogy (read: Star Wars). In the fourth grade, I became more interested in telling stories of my own than listening to those of others.  Doctors—being doctors—attempted to medicate them out of me, but the best cure has always been a pen, a notebook, and my crazy, unrestrained imagination. I continue to whittle away at these stories in my endless search for the one that will finally bring me back to reality. All the while, I secretly hope such a story will never come along. I hear "reality" is far too boring.

Review & Giveaway: Leashed & Groomed for Murder by Zoe Dawson

About the Books:
(Going to the Dogs #1:) Leashed: Est. page #: 79
First book in the Going to the Dog series and is a short novella at 26,000 words.

Jack has some ‘splainin’ to do!

That's right! Callie Lassiter's normally well-behaved Great Dane Jack has run off and done the wild thing with the neighbor's dog. It must be puppy love! It's doubly embarrassing since she's a professional dog trainer. Of course, the neighbor would have to be hot, hot nightclub owner bad boy Owen McKay, just the kind of man Callie is determined to avoid.

Owen’s comfortable with his playboy status and the hype in the media. But the ground moves beneath his feet when he gets an eyeful of the girl next door. The Dog Whisperer never looked this good! How can he convince this wholesome honey that his player days are behind him? Maybe Jill, his Great Dane can help him with this dilemma now that she’s pregnant and Callie’s dog is to blame.

Is this bad boy a bad bet?

(Going to the Dogs #2:) Groomed For Murder:

Est. page # (by Amazon): 190

Brooke Palmer owns Pawlish, an exclusive doggie spa and grooming business in upper Manhattan, but when a client’s champion poodle gets a bad poodle cut and has to undergo therapy to recover, the client sues. The lawyer they send is drop dead gorgeous, but Brooke won't be wooed by a corporate shark in a sharp suit.

Corporate lawyer Drew Hudson has better things to do then take on this ridiculous lawsuit, but since he works for the client’s husband, he has no choice. After meeting the beautiful, sweet-tempered owner, he can’t keep his mind on the silly case. ***************************************************

My Review:

Leashed and Groomed for Murder are the first two books in the Going to the Dogs series.  In Leashed, we meet Callie and her great dane, Jack.  Callie has a thing for bad boys, but it's a habit she is trying to quit.  She's avoiding her next door neighbor Owen, who seems like a very bad boy.  That all changes when Jack impregnates his great dane Jill.  Is Callie strong enough to resist Owen or will she give in to his bad boy charm?  Is Owen more than just the bad boy he seems to be?  Who is stealing items from Owen and Callie's and the neighbor apartments?  Find the answers to these questions and more by reading Leashed.

In Groomed for murder, Callie is planning her wedding to Owen.  The story focuses more on Callie's best friend, Brooke, who owns a doggie beauty spa.  When a difficult client with a difficult dog attempts to ruin Brooke over a bad hair cut, Brooke meets Drew, the attorney representing the difficult client, sparks fly.  Is their relationship doomed because of the situation?  Things are complicated further when the difficult client is murder and Brooke gets blamed.  Will Callie and friends be able to figure things out to clear Brooke's good name?

These books are both quick fun reads.  I read them both while waiting in the airport for my plane.  The group of friends Callie, Harper, Brooke and Poe all met in the dog park and all have dog related lives.  They have become really good friends and are very supportive and compliment each other in their own unique ways.  I like that each book will be around a different woman.  I really can't wait to read Poe's story, since she is my favorite.  The first book doesn't have a whole lot of mystery.  It's more of a sweet romance.  But it's good, regardless.  If you love light mysteries, girlfriends, and dogs these stories are perfect for you.

AMAZING! There is not enough words to describe how much I loved Hunted. Ednah Walters has outdid herself if that is even possible.

Author Ednah Walters

I grew up reading Nancy Drew and Hardy boys mysteries, hence Stratemeyer influence, before I graduated to Mills & Boons (starting with Janet Daily's Shutter the Sky) and the rest is history.

I enjoy good love stories, tingly mysteries and wondrous adventures. When I finished my college and decided to be a stay-at-home mother, I devoured books like they were going out of production, until reading just wasn't enough. So I started to write.

I've written picture books, contemporary and romantic suspense, biracial/multicultural books, and finally YA fantasy. Awakened is the first book in The Guardian Legacy series. I'm working on book 2, tentatively named Betrayed. When I'm not writing, I do things with my family, five children or my darling husband of 18 years. I live in a picturesque valley in Utah, the setting for my series.
